Key West Citizen: College Makes Dive Lagoon Crystal-Clear
By: John Guerra, Citizen Staff

June 12, 2010- The scene at the college's dive lagoon silt-removal project is otherworldly.  A dredge barge vacuums silt off the lagoon bottom and pushes it and the accompanying water through long plastic pipes and into 70-foot-long, interconnected nylon bags in the Florida Keys Community College parking lot.

As the water enters the huge bags, which resemble lengths of pastry before a baker cuts them into smaller pieces, the silt separates from it and falls to the bottom. Each successive bag, known as geotubes, removes smaller particles until the water returns to the lagoon crystal-clear. Click here to read more.

TIME: In Florida Keys, Residents Plan Their Own Spill Cleanup
by: Nathan Thornburgh

June 14, 2010-- A small island in the middle of a big ocean, Key West has always made a virtue of its isolation. In 1982, for example, an onerous Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Route 1, which links the Keys to mainland Florida, resulted in the island's declaring itself the autonomous Conch Republic. This was, of course, mostly a joke ("We Seceded Where Others Failed" was its e pluribus unum), but the mayor's declaration of independence did include a twinge of real anger and a vow that "we have no intention of suffering in the future at the hands of fools and bureaucrats." FKCC Hosts Emergency Forum to Discuss Oil Spill Impact on Florida Keys

May 4, 2010—FKCC will host a community-wide forum to discuss the potential impact and urgent issues that the Florida Keys will be facing in the coming weeks after the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  The event, organized by FKCC Dean of Marine Science and Technology Dr. Patrick Rice, will take place this Wednesday, May 5 at 5:30pm in the Library on the FKCC campus.  All community members are invited to attend.

Panel participants will include Dr. Rice (fisheries expert), FKCC Professor Dr. Alex Brylske (coral reef ecology expert), Monroe Count Mayor Silvia Murphy, a Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Representative (TBD), and representatives from the FKCC Student Environmental Club.  The purpose of the event is to provide information on potential effects on coral reefs and Gulf fisheries, provide information on how to participate/volunteer throughout Florida, share ideas and begin the mobilization of human resources.

"This is a very time sensitive issue," says Rice.  "The time to organize is now, before the impacts are felt."
